|
First of all… Hi, new member. Don't know how long I'll be here, but any info you can provide will be great.
My mom's friend currently has a 2001 Dodge Durango, and is thinking of selling it, but there's a few things that need to be fixed first.
The rear heater core is toast, gone, blown like you wouldn't believe, and the brake calipers need to be replaced
Now I can do the work myself, I've been working on trucks for a few months, plus I have a friend that's very well knowledge about the stuff as well.
Any idea what I'm looking at for $$$$ on the parts?
Thanks a million guys!

Hi Randy, welcome aboard. This is the best site for all things Durango. I'm sure the experts, gurus and the odd Jedi will chime in soon to help you out.

rockauto shows raybestos remanufactured calipers at $35/ea and SG-series pads for $21/set. Be careful with the caliper bolts.
The rear heater core lists for $136 from Dodge but places like dodgeparts.com show $98.
BTW, you'll have to evacuate the A/C system to remove the rear heater core.

If the front heat works, then who cares about the rear heat. For now at least, get the brakes fixed for <$100 and join the club.

He's right you know.
People in the back don't really matter.

Well, I for one think it's nice of him to fix the major problems before selling it.

As someone who's had to sit in the back the entire 22 years of her life… I resent this!!
Worth fixing just to have it fixed, if you know someone who can evacuate the A/C system for you.

First of all, welcome aboard!!
I'm surprised that IndyD hasn't chimed in yet… must be sulking over the Colt's loss. Aaaawwww!! Too soon??LOL!!
Anyway. I understand you fixing known problems and that's good, but don't overlook the normal stuff like wires, air filter, lights, etc.
As for the heater cores, you have one of two options
1. Fix it and increase the resale value so you get something for your investment
2. Discount it and disclose it to the new owner and let them make the decision (maybe they can replace it on their own?)
Brakes, calipers, rotors, pads are all safety related items and I wouldn't recommend selling it with bad brakes. They're fairly reasonably priced and probably a lot cheaper than the heater core. If you do sell pretty quickly, I'd recommend mid grade pads and rotors. My personal recommendation is either AutoZone Gold pads/semi-metallic and Gold Rotors, or Bendix usually from Advance.
If it's the heater core, then you'll probably want to remove and replace the evaporator core at the same time. I know for the front core you have to pull the dashboard for both, and that's why it's not much extra labor to R&R both at the same time. When the heater core fails, most of the time the evaporator core usually isn't too far behind. I'm not totally sure if it's the same work with the rear so check.
Again don't overlook the obvious stuff like normal wear and tear items, especially Ball Joints. Again, either R&R them yourself or discount the sale price and disclose it so next owner knows about it.
Charge the rear passengers $25 a ride! That should help raise funding for the repair. LOL!!

You sure it's the rear heater and not the front heater core. That's the one I typically hear go.
