I have a couple of questions about Hemi Orange paint.
Is the exterior color "Hemi orange" used on the early 70's Challenger the same color the 426 engines were painted with?
Is the "Hemi orange" used on the new 200X model Chargers and Challengers the same Hemi Orange from the 70's?
Is the "Hemi orange" used on the new 200X model Chargers and Challengers the same Hemi Orange the 426 engines were painted with?
Thanks. A co-worker and I were having a discussion. My co-worker was impressed that I knew the actual name of the Charger Daytona color (go, mango) and further discussion ensued and we had these questions.
Thanks to those who're willing to share their knowledge.

I don't think the block paint color and the body paint color matched
ever.
I doubt the paint codes stayed the same over the years. Tastes change, formulas change and, while color names may stay the same, the actual color and color codes may not.
With that said, JMHO. No evidence to support my theory.

I'm sure they've changed over the years, technology, materials, paint laws, etc. I believe the car color was called "big bad orange" or something like that but I don't think they matched engine and body. Probably a close match, but not exact.

Sherman, set the wayback machine to, oh, 1970 and let's see what we can find out:
1) In 1970, there were three "orange" body colors, with the Dodge/Plymouth names:- Go Mango / Vitamin C (K2) (this looks 'orange'),
- Hemi Orange / Tor-Red (V2) (this is more reddish),
- Orange / <nil> (999) (special paint code) As far as I know, none of the above matches the "Hemi Orange" engine color, of which there are actually two:- "race Hemi orange" (bright orange, used on '64-'65 race hemis, and '62-'64 Max Wedge)
- "street Hemi orange" (red-orange, '66-'71 street hemis, '69-'71 hi-po 383/440, possibly '69-'71 340, some police engines) As far as I know, none of the body colors directly match the engine colors - though apparently the engine colors were subject to significant variation.
Current "Hemi orange" (LC) also probably matches none of the above, but I don't know that for sure (it'd be really surprising if it did, because AFAIK the pigments of choice today are completely different)
Come to Carlisle, and you'll see them all!

Good call Lauren. I think it'd be great, specially for a musclecar. Sort of like naming a guy Sue, per the song. It'd mean that the car would just have to be tougher and better than everything else to pull it off.

Definitely not a color I'd want. Bleh! I'm sure some will like it, though IMNSHO it's more likely to be females than males.
