I'm looking at buying a 2005 Durango SLT, Adventurer with Hemi and 43000 miles. It looks pretty nice and the only real issue is neither of the Key FOB's work for the keyless entry. Do you think a simple reprogram will fix it ($58 at the Dodge dealership) or could it be something more costly??

I used to have a '99 SLT 5.9L but had to get rid of it when the third kid came along and we needed a minivan. The oldest is almost out of the booster seat and I need a more reliable (and bigger) ride than my '95 Nissan Altima. I liked my '99 D and will hopefully be back in another one soon.

Thanks,

Ryan

Make sure you get it checked out first at a dealer to ensure that's the problem.

Just a question; if it's a $58 fix at the dealer then why hasn't the seller done it? That's not a lot of money to avoid having to mention the issue at all. There's LOTS of D's available and the market is still favorable to the buyers, so make sure the one you want is right (or at least as you expect it to be).

The seller bought the Durango for his wife a few months ago and hasn't had time to fix it. The seller recently started working for a Chevy dealership and says it looks bad driving a Durango to work which is why he's selling.

The key fob does look like the original so I don't think he has tried to replace it with a new one yet. He probably hasn't tried the reprogram yet either.

I remember on my '99 I had to open it up and fiddle with the spring contacts from time to time. I wonder if this might be the same issue.

This is the only real problem I have and it sounds pretty minor. I was just curious if anyone has ever had problems that a simple reprogram or new FOB didn't fix?
thanks,

Ryan

Sorry, my fob still works after 10 years.

If the deal is right, go for it regardless. Even if you had to use a key, would it be the end of the world? I remember when I didn't even have A/C in my cars.

I remember when mine didn't have A/C too. Oh wait, that's right now still… Bang Head into Wall Between the D's A/C going out and that Festiva I had last year that didn't even HAVE air, I haven't had A/C in a vehicle in 2 years.

Why not make it a part of the deal to have him solve the key fob problem? If it really is only a $58 fix he should be willing to do it to make the sale. Otherwise, a couple of key fobs can get expensive.

To get two of those keys… you're over $300 BTW.

Tell the seller that you'll buy it under the condition that he allow you to take it to a Dodge dealer (or inde) to have them inspect it for you. I do this before buying any used car. Believe me, you'll be surprised the issues they'll find. Most dealerships offer this service too for under a $100.

Most recently, I was looking for an M5 for my wife. We found a great deal on one. The guy was ok with us taking it to BMW to have it checked out. Turned out all four rims were bent and the cooling system was shot. Worst part, the dealer found that the airbag light was on but that it had been masked off with black tape so it doesn't shine through.

We took the car back and told him. I was pissed. He seemed surprised and told us that he's had the same mechanic for years. He swore he knew nothing about it and even doubted us until I showed him the paper work from BMW. Maybe the guy was honest and he was just getting ripped by his mechanic. You never know.

Like someone else said, if it's an easy/cheap fix, they'd have taken care of it already.

Good luck.

Could always throw an aftermarket alarm (remote start too if desired) that'll have keyless entry, and give you added protection and features for a few hundred bucks. BUT the idea of selling it just because he now works for Chevrolet sounds like a bunch of BS to me.

I went ahead and bought the Durango. The price was low enough that even if I have to replace the keys I'm still making out pretty good. The rear bumper had a minor crack which is currently getting repaired and I should have it tomorrow. It feels good to be back in a D. Thanks for the posts.

Make sure the batteries in them both are good. Most of those key fobs take those slim dime sized battery.

Rear bumper pad has a recall/TSB for fading. If it's cracked, have them check it while it's in the dealer.

Also, check the Gen2 section for overall recall issues/notices. The dash recall prevents auto fires.

Nice rig, best of luck on it and keeps us posted. Congrats!
