Search The DOC Forum Archives

ATTENTION: this search uses a simple text matching algorithm that does not support any of the special input modifiers allowed with other search programs (i.e. AND, OR, -, +, ", wild card characters, etc.) Including any of those items in your input will cause the program to try to match them as part of the results! Except when the "Match EXACT phrase" option is selected (which causes the program to find exactly what you type in — including any spaces), blank spaces are treated as word separators. The program also doesn't check for "whole word" matches, so be careful when using something that may be "part" of another word.

Notes on searching the archives

The messages are divided into year range groups because searching the entire archive all at once will cause your browser to time out waiting for the search results to be displayed (there are almost 192,000 messages stored here!)

You'll get the best search results if you input only enough words into the Find: box to ensure locating what you're looking for without going overboard. The more words you enter, the longer the search takes! As a bench mark, on 12/15/01 a search for "key fob" in the 1999 date range took just under 5 minutes to finish, so be patient if your search seems to be taking a while.

There are 5 options available to help you better target your searches as follows:

  • Match ALL words - returns links to messages containing all of the words you entered but, since it searches for individual words, they may not necessarily be adjacent to each other. Acts like the boolean AND function.
  • Match ANY words - returns links to messages containing at least 1 of the search words entered. Acts like the boolean OR function.
  • Match EXACT phrase - returns links to messages containing the search words exactly as entered - including any spaces, punctuation, etc.
  • Ignore case - ignores letter case when checking for matches.
  • Match case - letter case "must" exactly match what you typed in.

The results screen displays the number of matching messages it found along with the search terms used. The links are displayed in a single column in the same order they appeared in the index for that month (i.e. newest on top, threaded responses below the root message.) However, due to how the search routine works, it's not possible to display related messages in their original "indented" threaded format.
