Disconnecting/Reconnecting A/C Lines

Going to be doing some engine work today and was just curious about something.

I bought a new A/C compressor to paint and do some detail work on so I need to remove my old unit. Is it **safe** to simply disconnect the hoses from the old unit and quickly reconnect them to the new one? Keep in mind that my D has been sitting dormant for about 6 months and yes I'll get it recharged afterwards.

Just curious. Any help is appreciated.
