Transmission slipping? What to do?

Driving home from work tonight I was stopped at a light. When I started to accelerate I thought I was hit/nudged in the back by another car. Turns out I was pressing the gas pedal, the revs were increasing but I was not moving. Then suddenly, bam the trans goes into gear hard and I start moving. This happened several times at the next few lights then stopped and was OK. I'm not sure what is going on here, I checked the trans fluid while running and in nuetral and it was right on and looked good. Could this be a torque converter going bad? Any thoughts or things I should look for? It's a 98D 5.2L with 36K miles. Thx folks...
