You are not going to get enough water on the road, short of a deep flood to do anything to the engine by removing that flap. Any rain or norrmal spray is not to to hurt. You need a good slug/volume of water to cause damage. Mine has been off for 3 years with my K&N. Believe me mine was tested on the road with all the flooding rain the NE has had this summer.
