abs and brake light on

it has been a while since my last post but i have lurked for years. my original screen name was genec. i have a 1998 318 with 130,000 miles. looking for ideas what this might be befor i take it to the shop. while i am driving down the road, about 15-20 minutes into the drive, the abs and brake lights come on and the speedometer stops working. all other guages work properly and the brakes seem to work fine, although i have not tried any stops that would cause the abs to activate. the speedometer will become operational again after about 5 minutes. when i reach my destination and turn the d off, all is fine when i start back up again only to go thru the same cycle. any ideas? thanks gene
