Electric fan running constantly when A/C on

Do any of you know why the electric fan runs all the time the A/C is on? I could understand it coming on on-demand, but mine runs all the time either the A/C is on, or the defrost is selected. It never turns off.. is this normal? How long do the motors last if they are running this amount.. I'm guessing out of the 15k I have on my truck, the fan has done 12k.. seems a bit excessive to me. Not to mention the added noise level coming out from under the hood when I pull up at lights, etc.
