When the pedal goes all the way to the floor such as when the rake line blew or when bleeding the system, the rubber plunger inside the MC will be damaged by the rust and corrosion that accumulates at the end on the bore that the plunger travels in. Under normal use it does not travel the entire length of the bore, so corrosion builds up in the area not travelled. One way to prevent this when bleeding the brakes is to but a block of wood under the brake pedal to limit the trave of the pedal.
