My parents 91 Ferd Aerostar had a recall on it. One day filling up the tank for them, I noticed a strong fuel smell. No Leak, just a smell. Got it home an went under. Fuel starps x2, were loose, my thoughts were that the tank shifted and the vent line came off. No big deal. just enough room for me a tranny jack an a board to get under and lower to put it back on. lowered it 3 inches, but line was on? Got a mirror and flash light, what I saw was a crack along the injection mold seam line about 6-7 inches long). called Ferd service and told them, they told me that they getting same type of calls, and for me to bring it in, This was about when the van was 6 years old. after replacing it at a cost of 400.00, a recall was sent out about a year later, my parents got there money back.
My thoughts go back to that, if your tank mounts were'nt changed (something about upgrade to double toggle)and they become loose, maybe a good bump or stop could have allowed a tank rupture. and since there was no power on at the time, it looks to be a rupture of the tank, and by the amount of gas on the ground, it is located around one of the sides on the top half of tank.

another thing I heard and i'll be short, is installation/location of Amplifiers. Drill a hole to mount it, put 2 and 2 together. Not saying that this is your case, just a story I heard.
