IIRC the tank is plastic, so it isn't likely that salt did much to the tank itself..

Latent leaks aren't likely, because environmental regs require that the D keep checking itself for fuel-system leaks.. that's why codes pop when your gas cap is loose..

It is actually possible that overfilling could be at least part of the problem here.. 'rounding up the the next dollar' is actually illegal in any state that has to do vapor recovery.. and if you are at a vapor-recovery pump is it is a really bad idea to top off, because you do get liquid fuel into the recovery system..

It'll be interesting to see what the diagnosis is..
