The drivers in the PCM are pretty well protected. DC would go broke on warranty claims if they weren't. In 1980 you could get away with that argument, but the auto industry has gotten pretty good about designing electronics for the automotive environment.

It is entirely possible that the driver in the PCM has gone bad, but I'd bet that the purge solenoid was NOT bad in that case.

"solenoid going bad could have sent a charge to the PCM" is about as credible as "Saddam Hussein going bad could have sent a charge to the PCM".. Oh, wait, I don't want to go there.. 8-)
