I have never heard of the purge solenoid damaging the PCM

and I would be very surprised if it were true. DC engineers are smarter than that, and I never saw a TSB about that (though I admit I haven't read all the TSBs for all model years)

I think what they are saying is "this is the code we got, but we aren't sure if it is because of the purge solenoid or something else. So, rather than really diagnose the problem, we'll just replace the part; if that doesn't fix it, we'll replace the PCM. If THAT doesn't fix it, we'll worry about that later."

What we used to call in the computer biz "module swappers".. don't figure out what's wrong, change parts until the problem goes away.
