I think you're supposed to remove the big aluminum bracket that holds the ac compressor and the alternator. That will expose the entire front of the engine. At least that's the way it looks on my '98 with a 5.2. The support brackets they make these days to work with the serpentine belt are a lot better than the old v-belt brackets, but often times you've got to take a lot more stuff off than you used to change a thermostat or water pump.
