The gas gauge is not linear. In normal driving, I'll get up to 200 miles before it goes down to 1/2, then it rapidly drops the rest of the way. You should get the low fuel alarm with about 40 miles left in the tank (DTE if you have the overhead computer).
It sounds like what you are seeing is about right.
Edit: When the low fuel light goes on mine takes 20-22 gallons.
