You may want to pull the pan and see what is in it. If there are chunks and not dust then you are toast. If you have normal dust on magnet you may want to call around to local shops and just chat to see what they suggest. If the shop just gives you a canned speech about just bring it in it is $x00 to diagnose -- keep calling. Find a shop that knows the 44RE inside and out and is willing to talk to you.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

A side OT note. My son's 97 Blazer with 4L60E tranny at 100K miles was doing a slam hard 1-2 shift after it got warm and was flipping in and out of OD at will. Shops wanted $1500 to tear it apart after I explained the symptoms. I researched on the net and called shops to find out more about the 4L60E. It turns out this was a normal thing after 100K (like clockwork). $200 for a new valve body kit and it shifts like a dream.
