Little black thing on the engine, nothing connected to it?

I was under the hood of my '00 D 4.7 today and noticed something I never noticed before. On the pass side of the engine, mounted on a bracket near the 2nd plug back was a small (1" square) black part with a connector on the end. However nothing was connected to it and no nearby connectors either (that could have fallen off...). I looked around some more and found another, on the same offset bracket, mounted a little further towards the pass side on something else.

My best guess would be a transistor heat sinked..by why 2 with no connections?
