Re: What's the reason to replace pads with the rotors?

When I had Raybestos Quick Stop pads, I developed a terrible squeal in the front about 20,000 miles after we had put them on. As a matter of fact, it was worse with no brake pressure than with pressure applied. I had them checked at a Les Schwab in Oregon, and they couldn't find anything. I re-lubed the caliper pins in South Lake Tahoe to no avail. After we got home, we pulled the calipers off and found cracked pads on both sides. Replaced the pads (Bendix TitaniuMetallics) and the problem disappeared. No new squeals after 3500 miles.
I believe I overheated the ceramic pads at the end of a long downhill in Montana, but not sure. It was shortly after that when the squealing started.
You might want to pull things apart and get a good look instead of just checking for pad thickness.Joe
