Hello Mark,
I have exactly the same problem as u but mine is located on the driver side front. It happens about 10 to 25% of the time,not sure the cause but when i put my shoulder into it or wrap my hand round it the sound goes away. Maybe if it keeps happening more often i will try the same thing u are doing to fix it.
