Rear only...

For on road use, rear chains are all that is necessary. A good 4x4, aka D, doesn't usually have any problems in the go department on snow, the problem is stopping. A 4x4 doesn't stop any better than a 2x4 for most drivers. So chain up the rear and keep speeds practical for the conditions and you'll have no problems. If you have icy/silver thaw conditions, stay home or get studded tires or chain up all 4. Cable chains are another option, usually easier to install and easier on bare road surfaces, less aggressive. tim
