A lot of the tolerances are "extremely" tight (i.e. pinion spacing can't be off more than.001 inch, backlash can't be off more than.003 inch, etc.) and don't leave any room for "that's good enough." Everything has to be "exactly right" or parts will wear out again real quick!

Personally, I think rebuilding a diff is one of those things were it's best to check around, find an expert who's "very" experienced and "highly" recommended, and pay whatever it cost to have it done right the first time! Saves the aggravation and money of having to keep getting it redone cause one of the adjustments wasn't "exactly" right the last time.
