Transmission won't stay in right gear!

I have a 2k with the 4.7 and automatic transmission. Is this a 5 speed transmission including the overdrive and dual ratio 2nd gear? My problem is that it won't stay in the proper gear going up hill and it's even worse when I tow my snowmobiles. I always turn off the overdrive around town and when towing. I'm not sure what gears this is happening in, so I will use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th as examples. It will upshift from 2nd to 3rd, but goes into 4th too soon. Then it will bog down and downshift back to 2nd instead of 3rd. It just doesn't want to stay in that middle gear. This is hard to deal with towing up a 20 mile pass! Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a chip or programmer that will fix this problem?
