I have done a fair amount of 4 wheeling in my 2002 D (stock 31" tires with shackle/torsion lift) and never have had an alignment problem. I do not go blasting down the trail at high speeds however. If you are into high speed offroad racing, you should get a different vehicle. The D is not well suited to high speed offroad antics.

If you are knocking the steering out of alignment after only 1 session of 4 wheeling, you are probably doing other damage to your suspension beyond the alignment problem (ball joints, cv joints, steering system, etc). I am guessing you are either beating the crap out of your D or you have another problem with your suspension/steering system that is causing your alignment problem.

The main reason you might use a steering stabilizer is to manage larger tires. They are also used for high speed offroad racing, but the D is not a good platform for offroad racing.
