g makes some real good points. And before you think I'm ragging on you, I have to say I'm guilty of the same kind of thing myself. One day my 'd' suddenly started overheating last year. Since it's still fairly new it wouldn't occur to me that it would be low on coolant, thought it had to just be the guage. I've also been taking it in to be serviced rather that do it myself, and assumed that they checked the coolant. WRONG! The thing was clear out of coolant. I did shut it off and wait when the needle climbed well past where it normally is. Even at that the temp light came on before I parked it. Scared the cr*p out of me. I was afraid I'd wrecked it by (1)assuming that it was to new to have any problems and (2)trusting that someone else was paying attention. Anyway, when I got back home I found a small leak at the thermostat housing. Fixed that and hasn't used any coolant since. NOW I CHECK THE FLUIDS AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. I used to do that all the time, but over the years I've gotten lazy. I came to believe that manufacturers built engines better so they don't require so much attention, and they have. But still, one should still check. I fortunately got a wake up call that didn't cost me anything. Could have cost me a new engine!
