As to what else one can do in these situations rather than continue to drive. Get emergency road service and rental car coverage added to your car insurance. These two things don't cost that much, would have gotten your car towed to somewhere it could be repaired, and got you a car to drive in the mean time. Another thing you can do is buy a cell phone. Even if you don't subscibe to a phone service, 911 still will work. Stranded counts as an emergency and they can either relay a message to someone for you or get the police out to help. It's not as quick and easy as just driving the thing home, but it won't cause further damage either. I agree that engines shouldn't fail that soon, but when red lights come on and needles hit the red line it's time to stop right now. It means something is wrong that needs attention immediately. Yellow check engine abs lights mean you can continue for a while. Red ones mean stop. I'm glad they're going to fix it for you. Just realize that in these situations the dealership has a lot of discretion as to whether to fix it or not. In fact, if the service writer writes it up the way you told the story and just did the work, there's a good chance the dealership wouldn't get paid for the repairs.
