I actually had a hose burst while on the freeway(don't recall which one, but the mechanic said it was a to replace cause you have to remove so much just to get to it...), didn't see any steam or anything, just saw the temp gauge slowly start to rise...after getting off the freeway, I started to notice the steam. since I was close to the freeway, the temp didn't peak yet, and no red lights, I was able to get home...

The next day however, I drove to the dealer, which was close by luckily. though by the time I got there the temp was peaking and what apparently what was left of the coolant was steaming away...My bad...
didn't do any damage, as far as they could tell, and no issues have come up since the hose was replaced...I was pretty lucky...but I get the idiot award for the simple fact of driving it when I should have had it towed...

One interesting thing the mechanic told me was that when the radiator fluid was completely evaporated, the temp needle would have most likely gone back down to 0 degrees...or very low...I don't recall the reason, but found that interesting...
