Unfortunately evaporators do leak and usually around the line connector. If I can't find a leak by carefully sniffing the system with the car engine NOT running I go to the evaporator (if the engine fan is blowing you have no chance of finding a small leak, start the car and let the A/C stabilize then turn it off and sniff while the high side equalizes to the low side).

I have found that if the sniffer probe is placed into the condensate drain (where the water comes out) any freon leaking from the evaporator since it is cool and dense tends to fall out through the hose. Your sniffer, provided it is sensitive to R134A, should pick up an intermittent hit.

If you have used a UV dye it may also start to show up in the condensate drain since the dye tends to be washed off by the condensation. Don't forget to also consider the old standby signs. As the Freon leaks out it carries some system oil with it. The Freon will disperse into the air leaving the oil which will collect dust and dirt forming a dust ball around the leak. I have found leaks this way that for whatever reason wouldn't sniff.

Good hunting.
