I'm new to the board, so forgive me if this topic has already been discussed in the archives...

I've got a '99 2wd 'D' that has had the famous clicking/clacking noise from the front end. Just this week, the steering wheel has begun to get stiff and jerky at slow speeds (under 40mph).  The clicking has now become a clunk/creak.  My first guess is 'the boots need replacing'

Can anyone shed some light on this situation? What is the proper name (in the parts stores) for "the boots"? Can a part-time shadetree mechanic like me replace them myself?  If not, about how much would the pros charge me?  For the answers to these and many other questions, tune in tomorrow...same time...same channel.
