Re: Tire wear patterns with bad ball joints

As for aligment shops it really depends on the person doing it.
I had my wife drop her D at a Firestone shop near where she works after replacing all 4 ball joints myself and they tried to tell her the frame was bent 'cause they couldn't get it near to spec. (The D has never been hit and rode fine before the ball joints needed fixing... They also tried to get my wife to buy un-needed services, which she declined that totalled over $300.)

The D was terrible after that so called "alignment" -which I suspect was done by a novice covering for the normal front end tech and we only managed to get a partial refund.

I then took the D to Sears (mentioned nothing about Firestone touching it) and the tech showed me afterward how far out the D was when he got it and it was spot on spec when he finished (tires have been wearing great).

It's not really the shop, per se. If you find a good tech, stay with HIM as YMMV by going with any shop name. (having had good and bad
experiences with SEARS, Firestone, and independent shops at one time or another)
