The key is making sure your engine is not HOT when you hit it with water... I've been doing it this way for years and I've never had a problem:

If you live close to a pressure car wash, you're in there...
I usually drive it to the car wash to warm up the engine. Then I just spray that GUNK engine cleaner on and let it soak for 10 minutes or so. I've never covered up anything either. Rinse it off and then drive home... letting the engine dry from the heat. When I get home, it's just a liitle Son-of-a-Gun misted over the entire compartment and it looks new!

a lot of people are afraid that this will get things wet but... like I said, in 10 years not once did my cars not start or have problems... good luck!
