don't worry about the alternator its designed to get wet, do not "high pressure wash" the engine compartment however... I like spraying the entire compartment with simple green, use an old tooth brush or a scrub brush to clean the caked on areas, then after a few minutes, rinse with a fine spray... it should be fine, for all the aluminum, metal that looks like it has white powder on it, use 100% silicon spray, (do not get it on your belts... And you will have a engine compartment that looks like new
