The problem I had with bad ball joints was tire cupping. I have mud terrain tires and the tread would wear unevenly. Not inside or outside but would have high and low spots throughout. When I took it to the dealer they said everything was OK. I asked what tire shop they used for their alignments and he told me. I took it to that shop and the guy told me the ball joints were shot. I called the service manager back and he ordered them for each side. After they replaced them, they paid the shop to do the alignment. Tires are wearing great now.
On a side note. A year or so ago I went to sears and had an alignment done (special in the paper). Afterwards the tires were wearing on the inside(3 or so months) so I took it to a regular tire place and had the alignment done, he said it was 1" off on one side and 3/4" off on the other.
