I don't know where he got the "there is no carbon" from..
1) PAOs are still hydrocarbons,
2) most of the carbon crud in the oil comes from the combustion chamber, not the oil.

At any rate, you can run long drain intervals at your own risk. I personally don't. I use synthetic because I feel comfortble using them with a 6-7K drain interval, and for me that lets me change my oil every three months (which you should do regardless of mileage). I also like the cold-weather starting characteristics.
