My 2002 D (so far all stock) had the same thing. I thought it was pinging and some "experts" in my neighborhood plus my dealership said what they heard was just the fuel injectors clicking and throttle movement. This "pinging" noise (it is more a very mild clicking) is only audible while the D idles. I guess there is nothing you have to worry about.
