Ping under load. Could it be caused by the location of the IAT sensor?

If preignition can be caused by colder more dense air could it be possible that the PCM is adjusting the air/fuel ratio incorrectly due to its current hotter location in the intake manifold. I know people recommend moving its location when installing the IP stage II or III's, but what if the stock air filter is just replaced with the K&N filter that fits the stock airbox? I used to have the pinging problem under all accelerating conditions; rerouted the plug wires and almost all of it disappeared. Now it will ping only when the gas pedal meets the floorboard.
