Check Engine Light - and Cruise Control!

Any ideas on this -

A few weeks ago I was on the highway - wanted to use cruise - hit the button - it wouldn't come on - hit it a few more times it finally came on - I didn't think much of it.

Today I started up my Durango for the morning ride, I let it warm up a little bit being here in New Hampshire.  Got out on the main roads and there is a bit of a hill stretch - which I love - I get to punch it and listen to my Dynomax.  Well as soon as it down shifted the MIL check engine light came on and the CRUISE indicator came on under the trip meter!  It would not go off - but it definitley wasn't under the influence of cruise control.

So I pulled over a few miles down the road, turned off the engine - let it sit for a second, and restarted the engine.  The CRUISE light is now off but the check engine light is still on (I assume this is normal, figure it is important to let the driver know something happened and not shut off until the condition either clears or the alarm is cleared!).  The cruise control no longer functions.

Hopefully this is just a good indication my cruise control feature is now in need of replacement - otherwise the Durango ran perfectly all the way to work.  Nothing else is broken that I've noticed.  Gonna check the fuses later but that probably won't help!

Anybody else experience this?  Any ideas?
