A while ago I was off-roading. I came to the end of the rough stuff and clicked the switch into 2WD. I drove for about an hour down the road, then I noticed a smell of hot oil. Pulling onto the sand at the side of the road I heard and felt a clunk from the transmition. Seems I had been stuck in 4WD and the smell was the front diff oil being boiled out of the breather pipe!Yesterday my front diff was changed!
Don't let it happen to you. Stop the car and drive backwards and then forwards to ensure it is out of 4WD.
ps. Diff was done under warranty
