There's nothing that I've read that says that ABS codes are different or require different monitoring tools to present the code. If such a thing were the case, the OBD II manufacturers would mention it. What my book does not cover is certain codes (like someone recently mentioned a code CA). I found that code by going to www.obdii.com/codes.html and found the culprit.
Here's a brief description of the OBD II reader, functions and an example. Note: If in order to retrieve the ABS code you need to connect to the same connector, then I can't see you needing a different reader - would go against all standardization regs.
Description of five digit OBD II codes:
1st digit: character with possible values:
2nd Digit: numeric with possible values:
3rd thru 5th digits: numeric with possible values 000 - 999
P0720: Low Output Speed Sensor RPM at speed greater than 15mph. Transmission output shaft speed sensor does not match vehicle speed Probable culprit: Speed sensor on transmission output shaft.
On a 99 D, this is a cream colored plastic sensor visible towards the left rear of the tranny (may need to drop the skid plate if so equipped) Replacement cost around $31 bucks in Hawaii
