I dont agree..

Indeed you might be right, in that, if a chain or cable breaks it could cause steering problems.. however if a rear chain breaks it can also wrap the axel and cause damage as well...

lets face it folks, severe weather driving requires you to do what you have to... living here in the NW, i have been on chains many many times with both 2X4 and 4X4 vehicles. with out question the best control and confidence is achieved from 4 wheel chains on a 4X4 D... however most folks dont carry 4 wheel chains... if you find your self in a situation where the weather has turned nasty and everything is a sheet of ice, your BEST control will be to have the chains on the front of a 4X4 vehicle...(run in 4X4 lock) if your D is 2 wheel drive the back is your only option...

lets try to remember here, that having your equipment is good repair, and sensable driving and driving for conditions is still the best advice... stay under 30 MPH if your on chains, stay off the breaks, if you have to break be gentle, if you dont have chains try lowering tire pressure to 15 PSI untill you get past the trouble area.. if things are wet and the temps are hovering around 32 SLOW DOWN... especially here in the NW, black ice can be deadly... and prolly the best advice there is?... stay home if the weather is bad enought that you will need chains... prop your feet up in front of a good fire in the fire place and watch the snow come down outside...
