You can actually see the ball joints moving when they have failed.  Have someone stick their head behind the tire (while the control arm is supported with jackstands) and jerk the wheel around.  I could plainly see that my upper ball joint was moving when mine went bad.  The control arms are probably a lot harder to diagnose because of the fact that they have to be supported to see it move.  The wheel bearings usually have other symptoms (grinding, shudders, etc.) that help to diagnose them.  I wasn't able to make my wheel move around when jacked up, but my wheel bearings were still bad.
