Two consumer questions: crash results and tires

I am considering the purchase of a 2000 Durango. I have read some reports that the government crash test results for the 1998-2000 Durangos, which are not very encouraging. Apparently the during the first 3 years of production the government gave the driver side a two star rating (high likely hood of serious injury) and the passanger side 4 stars (above average). Is anyone aware of the what happened in 2001 to improve the ratings to a four star on the driver 's side? Should one worry about the poor two star rating? Any additional information/opinions anyone has on this issue is appreciated.
