may have something to do with the color - our 97 Flame Red DAK doesn't have it either but the D is quite noticeable from certain angles.

My husband works with staining and painting wood products and in that world, the "orange peel" effect is usually due to the finish drying faster on the surface thus creating the "dimples" in the final product. Sometimes from applying finish too thickly or having incorrect percentage of drying additives. Not sure what causes this on the D's.
