Brake Bleeding help

I'm going to flush my brake lines when I install my new pads and rotors, but I get conflicting info in different manuals. One says to go ahead and bleed the lines in the conventional way. Others give all kinds of warnings about the 4 wheel ABS and that I'll need some scan tool. What's the deal? Can I do this or not??
