Here ya go.

cut the frame rate from 29.97 or 30 to 15 frames/sec
cut the audio to 22k 16 bit mono
change the resolution.  320x240 and so on.

That should make the file sizes smaller.  Did you capture these off a DV CAM?  Try that and see what happens.  If now email me and I will talk ya through it.  

Also take a look at the DivX codec.  www.divx.com I think.
