Actually, with the remote being against(about 6 or 7 mm)the roof, that would be considered a pretty good rf shield! From what I can tell by my old remote, the antenna inside the unit looks to be a type of dipole, and I have two theories about what's happening.

First, if the dipole's radiation pattern (the lobes) is pointed towards the roof instead of forward, the signal would be cancelled by the nearby metal. As I look at the remote's design, it looks to have the rf emitted from the back end of the remote, perfect if it is clipped to the visor. But, when it is stuck inside the pocket, that same signal is pointed directly at a piece of metal.

Second theory, similar to first theory, but instead of the metal roof acting as a sponge for the rf, it acts as a ground plane, which bounces the signal several times through the vehicle, giving the garage door noise from the delay in signal which causes it to not see the proper code.

Bottom line is, something is causing our remotes to not work as well in the pocket as other places in the D, the question is, what???
