I've experienced the same thing, and have heard many others reporting the same bad range with garage door openers. I've even tried, with a little success, soldering a wire onto the opener's antenna(a trace on the pc board inside the remote), but it's still substandard.
It's obvious that the signal is being shielded by the sheet metal of the D's roof. Not much you can do when the signal is being shielded, although maybe using an external unit with a higher frequency may work better.
It'd be interesting to know though, if its just one brand of garage door openers or if the brand really doesn't matter. Both garage doors I've had problems with were Sears Brand...
