I was told by a mechanic friend of mine that the 98 and early 99 ball joints are inferior. He said that a union contract had them buy a certain percentage of ball joints from a certain union shop and that those are the ones with the problem. I have not been able to confirm this though. I have 51,000 mile on mine and had ball joints replaced twice so far. Thank goodness for extended warranty. I do a lot of off roading though. The dealer has never balked at replacing them.
