Uncle Frodo and other RPM spike suffers... RichPf '99

Had to make a trip to PA and back these past two days and I experienced the RPM surge syndrome. It appears to show-up after 30-45 minutes when the engine is hot and perhaps only when not under load. Surging frequency is random and progressivly increases, that is until the engine is shut off and has had a chance to cool. Is this what you experienced? Is it positively fixed by replacing the TPS or could it be a vacuum leak? What can I expect to pay for the TPS?
