He didn't have the climate controls on either "MAX AC" or "OFF" did he?

that's a Bad Thing To Do.. in any of the other positions there is a net positive pressure in the cabin and it's almost impossible to get exhaust inside.. I think the owner's manual warns about leaving the vents basically closed for extended periods, but I'm not positive..

Unless they were inside a garage it's not likely that CO in any concentration came in the cowl vents..
